According to the UNAIDS factsheet on AIDS, In 2016, Burundi had 2200 (<1000 - 6000) new HIV infections and 2900 (1800 - 4200) AIDS-related deaths. There were 84 000 (65 000 - 110 000) people living with HIV in 2016, among whom 61% (47% - 82%) were accessing antiretroviral therapy. Among pregnant women living with HIV, 84% (59% - >95%) were accessing treatment or prophylaxis to prevent transmission of HIV to their children. An estimated <500 (<200 - 1300) children were newly infected with HIV due to mother-to-child transmission. Among people living with HIV, approximately 53% (41% - 71%) had suppressed viral loads.
The population inside the country is more affected with that situation. That due to lack of nearest HIV centers for screening and management, some traditional behavior, polygamy, earlier wedding and earlier sexuality behavior without protection.The MMC add the HIV SCREENING AND MANAGEMENT as a service offered in order to contribute in reducing the HIV prevalence in the NYABIHANGA area.We are planning to offer the management of HIV, including screening, consulting and supply antiretroviral and prophylaxis to prevent mother to baby transmission.
